SionMiddle16.17
Sion is not a champion obsessed with mid-lane solo kills. He clears the wave first with W, then creates a numbers advantage on other lanes while the enemy mid is busy farming CS. Rather than prolonged fights against tanky opponents, this is an AP roaming build that uses Q's guaranteed stun and W's burst to take down squishy targets.
This guide is a summary of TesterHoon's Shinpae Master Invitational video, covering LoL Classic, pre-rework Sion. The build and strategy shown in the video take priority, and editorial suggestions are marked separately.
Flash +
Ignite. Roam with the mindset of committing your spells to secure a kill. Approach when your team's CC lands, and finish with
Ignite. Simply poking and returning makes it hard to recover the time spent moving. [Video 09:30–10:15]
Sion W - Death's Caress is the core of wave clear and burst. Use
Sion Q - Cryptic Gaze to lock down the target and create distance to detonate W. If the shield gets broken by poke first, it becomes hard to trade on your terms, so don't greedily try to farm CS and deal explosive damage at the same time.
Boots of Mobility: The boots shown in the gameplay footage. A choice suited for a strategy that constantly moves rather than staying in mid lane.
Shushei's Mana Jug →
Deathfire Grasp →
Rabadon's Deathcap have been organized as the core build flow described in the video. The video's 'Athene's Unholy Grail' refers to the classic
Shushei's Mana Jug. 'Deathfire Grasp' is
Deathfire Grasp. [10:45–10:54, 14:39–14:43, 16:02–16:18, 19:32–19:49]
If the laning phase is long, prioritize completing core items, but during roaming, buy items you can afford on each recall to increase immediate combat power. The mindset is to join the next fight strong rather than hoarding gold to hit core item prices. If you're short on gold after laning, consider selling
Crystalline Flask. The final six-item build and all situational alternatives were not confirmed in the video, so they were not filled in arbitrarily. [13:39–13:55, 16:02–16:18]
Anivia: The video evaluates this as a difficult matchup. Since your W shield gets broken by constant poke, sustain with
Crystalline Flask, push, and leave. The master's assessment that you 'can't get a solo kill' in this matchup is not an absolute rule for every situation. [04:19–04:37, 07:28–07:56]
Warwick: It explains that you can interrupt the old ultimate cast timing with a Q stun. Do not overinterpret this as the same interaction as the current regular LoL Warwick. [11:26–11:42]
Garen and other tanks: Avoid prolonged front-to-back fights. Push the wave first and then rotate. Rather than a pride fight with a tank, look for the enemy carries. [16:31–17:05]
Lux and other squishy targets: The moment your team lands a slow or CC is your window to roam in. Don't hold onto
Flash and
Ignite and miss the kill opportunity. [09:30–09:43]

Shinpae Master's Mid AP Sion: Clear the Lane and Roam to Blow Them Up
Key Points at a Glance
Summoner Spells
Runes: AP Set-up
The intro screen at 02:17 shows: 9x
Mark of Magic Penetration, 9x
Seal of Armor, 9x
Glyph of Ability Power, 3x
Quintessence of Ability Power. This replicates Magic Penetration +9 / Armor +9 / Ability Power +25.8. The option to take Magic Resist is also mentioned depending on the matchup, but the block above is based on the AP rune page shown on screen.
Masteries: Offense 22 / Defense 0 / Utility 8
The 30 points are distributed exactly as shown on screen at 02:39. It takes the offensive AP, magic pen, and damage masteries, and in utility: Summoner's Insight 1, Meditation 3, Strength of Spirit 1, Enlightenment 3. You need to distinguish between old and current builds.
Skills and Trading Patterns
Example Early Skill Order
The above order is an editorial suggestion and is not a complete restoration of the skill clicks per level from the video. It only includes the early example matching the level 6 screen at 10:54 which shows Q 2 / W 3 / R 1. It prioritizes W-centered wave control and Q damage.
Previously, you might have only leveled Q and W until level 10, but this guide introduces the option of putting a point into
Sion R - Cannibalism to heal and sustain longer. R is not a core part of the AP burst combo but rather a way to supplement sustain. [10:19–10:44]
The practical flow is: push the wave → check vision and ally positions → approach with W ready → stun with Q → detonate W and finish with
Ignite. This is a framework for engagement summarized from the video's strategy, not a rule that you must always enter from the same distance and order.
Item Build
Starting Items: Sustain and Early Intervention
The actual first purchase screen shows
Crystalline Flask + 1x
Sight Ward + 1x
Mana Potion. This provides early sustain and vision to track the enemy jungler's path or prepare for a level 2 roam. [Screen at 05:35, 05:41–06:07]
Doran's Ring start is also described as a roaming option for going in hard and backing out. It is not a build that combines both starting setups. The old elixir start is excluded as it's no longer good. [05:26–06:07, 20:30–20:55]
Boots and Core Items
Early Game Strategy: Reading the Map from Level 2
1. Create time in mid lane. Use W to quickly push the wave and pin the enemy mid. The goal is to arrive elsewhere first rather than going for a solo kill in mid.
2. Watch both jungle and bot lane. In the video, the plan to catch the enemy jungler is changed to a bot lane intervention. Level 2 roaming is not a fixed rotation but a card you play based on the enemy's path and your team's situation.
3. Give up dangerous CS. In situations where your shield is broken, losing a big chunk of HP for a single minion will also hinder your next move.
4. Plan your return after roaming as well. Don't just go straight back to mid after a bot lane intervention. Loop around through the tribush to threaten the enemy mid from behind, or leave room for a second gank. [04:34–04:55, 06:32–07:56, 09:43–10:05]
Mid Game Strategy: Target Squishies Instead of Tanks
When you encounter a tank in the side lane, don't keep hitting them for a long time. Push the wave and move, or swap lanes. Sion is not a pick that melts tanks with sustained damage; he's a pick that bursts down squishy targets in a short window. Don't linger in fights the enemy wants. [16:22–17:14]
Anivia·
Ezreal like comps that only defend, it's better to force them out with Baron pressure rather than making a risky frontal assault. Cutting off enemies entering your jungle to help your jungler's growth, then converting that advantage into the next gank or rotation, is also an important role. [17:14–17:39, 21:13–21:55]
