Master YiJungle16.18
Smite +
Flash. Smite secures the first buff safely and finishes Dragon and Baron. Flash is seen more as a combat tool to create the first kill reset than just an escape. Later in the video, he keeps Flash because one Flash can end the game, unlike Teleport. [25:49–26:07]

Cowsep's Classic Jungle AD Master Yi: How to Power Up Wriggle's Lantern and Reset with Crits
This guide is not about mid AP Master Yi—it's about **jungle AD crit Master Yi**. In the early game, you rush Wriggle's Lantern and clear camps repeatedly to complete Feral Flare. Once you get the B.F. Sword and Infinity Edge, you only go for sure kills, then use Phantom Dancer, Youmuu's Ghostblade, and Last Whisper to take down one enemy and start your ultimate reset.
I've compiled the classic AD guide that Master Yi expert Cowsep explains in a single game, covering runes and masteries, first clear, skill order, core purchases, and late-game macro. The top lane setup shown in the video is separated at the end.
TL;DR
- Role: Jungle
- Summoner Spells: Smite + Flash
- Runes: Attack Speed / Flat HP / Scaling CDR / Attack Speed
- Masteries: Offense 21 / Defense 0 / Utility 9
- Skill Order: 3 points in Q early → Max E → Max Q → Max W
- First Core: Wriggle's Lantern, then complete Feral Flare via 30 large monster kills/assists
- Crit Core: Infinity Edge → Phantom Dancer
- After: Youmuu's Ghostblade → Last Whisper
- Macro: Camps over blind ganks, sure kills over camps, finish teamfights with reset chain
Summoner Spells
Runes
9
Mark of Attack Speed / 9
Seal of Health / 9
Glyph of Scaling Cooldown Reduction / 3
Quintessence of Attack Speed.
The totals shown in the video are 28.8% Attack Speed, 72 Health, and 16.2% Cooldown Reduction at level 18. Attack Speed increases Madred's Bloodrazor proc chances and boosts the number of basic attacks during Double Strike and Meditation. Scaling CDR is hard to itemize and reduces Q's downtime during fights without resets and camp rotations. [00:00–00:44]
The video uses Flat HP seals because it's a cost-effective page that can also work top lane. He directly mentions that if you can make a dedicated jungle page, 9
Seal of Armor are better for the first clear.
Masteries: Offense 21 / Defense 0 / Utility 9
Offense 21 covers Attack Speed, scaling AD, damage increase, crit damage, armor penetration, and Executioner. Since the build goes Infinity Edge and Phantom Dancer, the crit-related masteries aren't wasted.
Utility 9 picks up Flash improvement, out-of-combat movespeed, recall time, summoner spell cooldown reduction, and Runic Affinity. The key is Runic Affinity: keeping blue and red buffs longer reduces mana issues and gank travel time simultaneously. [01:29–01:50]
Skill Order
Take Q at level 1, E at level 2, and get 3 points in Q by level 5. Then max E first, Q second, and W last. Rank up R at levels 6, 11, and 16.
Stop Q at 3 points early
Leveling Q improves camp clear and monster proc rate. But it doesn't significantly increase damage against champions and raises mana cost. Since you can't always guarantee blue buff, get 3 points in Q first and then max E to directly boost basic attack damage. Putting a 4th point in Q early is also possible, but the video's default is 3 points. [07:22–07:39, 09:53–10:04]
Only take W early if you expect an invade
During a normal first clear, don't take W early. Classic W doesn't reset your auto attack like modern Master Yi's, so it's not a skill to press for attack tempo. Only consider an early point in W when you know the enemy will invade your first camp and you need the heal and damage reduction. In the video, he tries using W for an auto reset and quickly corrects himself that it doesn't work. [03:28–03:37, 15:57–16:04]
Item Build
Starting Items and First Recall
Start with
Hunter's Machete + 1
Health Potion. The clear path in the video is: no leash, take Red buff with Q, Smite at around 500 HP, then go down to Krugs. The health potion is insurance for if the enemy jungler invades or the first camp procs unluckily. [02:08–03:20]
First recall target is
Madred's Razors. It gives each basic attack a 25% chance to deal 300 bonus magic damage to minions and monsters, making clear speed highly RNG-dependent. If procs keep missing and you're low on HP, you can recall earlier to buy just the Vampiric Scepter for sustain. [17:45–18:07]
First Core: Wriggle's Lantern and Feral Flare
Rush
Wriggle's Lantern. After 30 large monster kills or champion takedowns, it upgrades to Feral Flare. At this stage, don't wait for invisible gank angles; instead, continuously cycle camps to stack the item and gold.
Use Wriggle's ward at river near ally lanes or enemy jungle entrance. With vision, you can steal camps the moment the enemy jungler shows on the opposite side, and you can see incoming invades. [05:40–06:15, 09:15–09:32]
Feral Flare stacks matter, but the primary lategame damage comes from crit items. In the late game when slot space is tight, you can sell the Wriggle's line and replace it with Bloodthirster. [22:47–24:10]
Crit Core
From B.F. Sword to Infinity Edge
After Wriggle's, the first big goal is
B. F. Sword, with the completed item being
Infinity Edge. The video says you only get reliable Dragon damage after B.F. Sword. Don't force Dragon with just Wriggle's. [05:58–06:31, 10:18–10:31]
Infinity Edge is the biggest combat power spike in this build. With both crit chance and crit damage up, just one or two well-placed crits can secure the first reset. In one scene, he decides it's worth selling boots temporarily just to complete IE right before a fight. [11:45–11:54, 13:10–13:26]
After Phantom Dancer, Fight More
Next is
Phantom Dancer. It gives attack speed, crit, and movespeed to keep auto-attacking. In the video, he repeats the figure-8 camp rotation until Phantom Dancer, and after completing it, he prioritizes skirmishes over camps. [16:53–18:15]
Penetration and Finishing Items
Youmuu's Ghostblade
The third offensive core is
Youmuu's Ghostblade. Activate its active to close distance or extend Q range. For components: if you plan to fight, rush Brutalizer first; if you plan to keep farming, choose
Avarice Blade for extra gold. The video prioritizes Brutalizer for combat power. [19:13–19:31, 20:36–21:08]
Last Whisper
When enemies start building armor, go
Last Whisper. It's a finishing penetration item so your high crits don't get blocked by armor. In the video, it's purchased after Youmuu's to quickly take down melee champions like Pantheon and Lee Sin. [21:47–23:35]
Last Option for 100% Crit
If you need more crit,
Statikk Shiv. Its energized damage can also crit.
Elixir of Agility grants 15% crit chance for 180 seconds, so buy it before Baron or the final teamfight to cap crit chance with your items. [22:07–23:56]
If you freed up the Feral Flare slot late game, complete
The Bloodthirster to supplement AD and lifesteal. Swap when one crit and staying alive for the next auto matters more than Flare stacks.
Boots Choice
The game in the video had three physical damage dealers including Tristana, so
Ninja Tabi was chosen. It's rated as blocking a very significant amount of basic attack damage. [17:31–17:45]
- Go
Ninja Tabi against multiple auto-attack-based ADs.
- Go
Mercury's Treads against heavy hard CC (stun, fear, silence) and magic damage.
- Go
Berserker's Greaves if survival pressure is low and you want max clear/objective speed.
Master Yi already gets plenty of attack speed from his ultimate. Against dangerous team comps, survivability boots are better than Berserker's Greaves to survive the initial CC and transition into reset mode.
Jungle Macro
First Goal: Complete Wriggle's Without Leaving Camps Up
Before buying Wriggle's, whenever you have enough recall gold, clear one more camp on your path before backing. After Wriggle's, continuously rotate between both jungles in a figure-8 pattern, clearing spawned camps. Time the respawns so that when you finish one side and go back to the other, camps have respawned. [05:15–05:44, 16:04–17:00]
Prioritize Guaranteed Farm Over Blind Ganks
Don't sit around just because a lane is pushed. If there's no real kill threat (enemy HP/mana, ally CC, ward coverage), go back to camps. The video emphasizes that the biggest mistake is stopping farm to chase kills that have no reason to happen. [11:51–12:26]
Conversely, go for sure kills over camps when the enemy is low and has no escape. Even if your Wriggle's stacks are slightly delayed, kill gold and preventing lane loss are more valuable. When a big wave is crashing into tower and a dive is obvious, you must alter your path to avoid huge losses for your team. [03:35–05:10]
When Enemy Jungler Shows Vision, Check the Opposite Side
If the enemy jungler shows top, check his botside camps; if he shows bot, check his topside camps and objectives. Camp respawn timers are short, so even if empty, they will spawn soon. If the enemy might take your camps or an ally is about to take them, clear them first. [14:20–14:32, 19:35–19:57]
Dragon and Baron
Don't force Dragon with just Wriggle's. B.F. Sword is the minimum threshold. After checking enemy jungler's position and teammate locations, if you need to take it quickly, don't hesitate to use your ultimate for objective attack speed. [05:58–06:31, 14:08–14:20]
In the late game, prioritize Baron and Dragon over kills. Master Yi clears objectives fast thanks to attack speed and crit, but if you start alone and enemies collapse, you'll get blown up. Make sure your team is actually coming and save your ultimate and Smite.
Skirmishes and Teamfights
Only Engage If You Can Start the Reset Chain
Don't blindly Q onto the nearest enemy. Engage only when their primary CC is down or when one enemy is already low enough to die in one or two crits. Once you secure the first takedown, your ultimate duration refreshes and skills come back, allowing you to chain through low-health targets.
The basic flow is: **Use ultimate and Youmuu's → Q in → Activate E → Auto-attack for first kill → Use Q again to chase the next target**. Q is both a gap closer and a way to dodge targeted damage and key abilities—if you're already in auto-attack range, save it for their CC.
Don't Try to Auto-Reset with W
Classic W cannot be used like modern Master Yi's auto reset. Use it only to reduce incoming damage and heal when low, or to tank a big enemy ability. Pressing W when you can't re-engage after the channel ends just wastes ultimate time.
Flash for the Final Hit
Use Flash when only one more auto on a carry would start the reset chain. Late game, you can destroy towers quickly even without minions, so if enemies are down and you have Flash and ultimate left, it's better to end the game than chase more kills. [25:49–26:14]
Adapting for Top Lane AD Master Yi
The top page in the video uses 9
Mark of Lethality, 9 Flat HP seals, 9 Scaling CDR glyphs, and 3 Attack Speed quints. Attack Damage quints are also an option. This setup adds armor penetration to early 1v1 damage and crit scaling. [00:44–01:29]
Masteries change to Offense 21 / Defense 9 / Utility 0. Taking Exhaust and Flash with the Summoner's Wrath mastery reduces the exhausted target's armor by 10. The defense masteries provide flat armor and HP needed for level 1-2 duels. [01:48–02:08]
However, the video only explains top lane runes and masteries—items and laning are shown through the jungle game. So this is just a reference setup for modifying the jungle build, not a full top lane guide.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Don't wait too long for blind ganks just because you need Wriggle's stacks.
- Don't level Q too fast to 5 points, causing mana issues without blue.
- Don't use Classic W as an auto reset.
- Don't start Dragon with just Wriggle's before B.F. Sword.
- Don't fight constantly before Phantom Dancer, sacrificing camps and levels.
- Don't Q into the frontline of a teamfight without a reset target.
- If multiple enemies invade your jungle and no allies are coming, give up the camp.
One-Line Summary
Rush Wriggle's Lantern to stack Feral Flare's 30 charges, get 3 points in Q early then max E. Once you have Infinity Edge and Phantom Dancer, join fights for sure kills to start the crit reset chain, then finish late-game teamfights and objectives with Youmuu's and Last Whisper.
